Spring Cleaning: DIY Toxin-Free Cleaners

Do you worry about using toxic chemicals to clean your home? When I bought my RV, I hated the idea of using chemical cleaners. So many of the cleansers had warning labels about avoiding skin contact and toxic fumes. How could I possibly avoid the fumes when I was going to be living in a 300 square foot tiny home? I decided that I needed to make toxin-free cleaners using essential oils and other natural ingredients. That way I could rest easy knowing that the cleaners I used were healthy and I could clean my tiny RV home and be safe.

Since this is the season of spring cleaning for those living north of the equator, I decided I would share some of my DIY cleaner recipes with you.  These recipes are all-natural so you don't have to worry about nasty toxic chemicals when you clean.  These cleaners are easy to make. You probably have many of the ingredients in your home right now. So, let's gather up some ingredients and start making awesome, wonderful smelling, and toxin-free cleaners.

Basic DIY Cleaning Recipe Ingredients
  • Young Living Essential Oils, variety
  • Baking Soda
  • White Vinegar
  • Castile Soap
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Epsom Salt
  • Distilled Water
  • Witch Hazel
  • Citric Acid
  • Borax (I do not use on surfaces I touch)
* I only recommend using Young Living Essential Oils (YL) because they are Grade A therapeutic quality oils. Not all oils labeled as pure are 100% essential oils. Many other store brands are only 5% essential oils and 95% carrier oils or the water leftover from the distillation of pure therapeutic oils. For cleaning and aromatherapy, you only want to use oils that are 100% pure oils with no fillers. Quality matters when it comes to you and your family's health and wellness.

DIY Glass Cleaner Spray
This all-natural glass cleaner works great on windows, mirrors, shower doors, the outside of the microwave and other hard surfaces.

1/2 cup distilled water, less 4 Tbsps.
1 Tbsp. white vinegar
1 Tbsp. rubbing alcohol
8 drops orange essential oil
8 drops lemon essential oil

Mix all ingredients and shake well. Put into a glass spray bottle. Label your DIY container. (Honest, you won't remember a month from now what it is.)

Spray glass surfaces and wipe with a lint-free cloth.

I love these NatureO amber bottles. I bought mine on Amazon. These bottles have settings for mist and stream spray. I like that they are dark glass, so they help the oils stay fresher.

Toilet and Black Tank Cleaning Mix
One of my least favorite RV jobs is cleaning out the black tank. In case you don't know what that is, think of it as sewer tank mounted under your RV that needs to be emptied and cleaned out. Yuck. What I really hated were the chemicals you were supposed to put in the tanks to clean them. After you put the chemicals in the tank, you were supposed to vent the space and leave the area for 6 to 12 hours. That might work for some people but not for me. I live in my RV! So, I found this great natural toxin-free toilet and tank cleaner. Now, I don't hate cleaning my black tank as much as I used to. Really, I only hate cleaning the toilet a little bit.

1/2 cup Baking Soda
1/2 cup Citric Acid
1/2 cup Borax
10-15 drops Young Living Essential Oils: Purification Blend and/or Thieves Blend
1 tsp. distilled water (Use 1 ½ tsp. if making cleaning bombs)

Directions for Black Tank Cleaning Mix
Mix the baking soda, citric acid, and borax together in a large bowl. Add your essential oils and water. Continue to mix. SLIGHT fizzing is normal. The ingredients should remain as dry as possible.

I store my mixture in a glass jar (mine is a reused pickle jar). I add ½ cup to the toilet bowl and then flush it down about twice a month when the tank is about half full. If you want to get a good scrub, add some on moving day and let the movement of your driving slosh the fizzy mixture around in your black tank.

Notes for Making Cleaning Bombs
Add 1 ½ teaspoons water to the mixture if you want to use molds to make little cleaning bombs. Once the mixture is just barely wet, but sticking together, press the mix tightly into bomb molds. Let the molds dry overnight, then pop them out and store them in an airtight container until you need to use them. Based on the size of your molds, put two bombs in your toilet before flushing.

Sink Drain Freshener and Declogger
1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup white vinegar
8 drops YL essential oils (Rosemary, Eucalyptus, and/or Tea Tree)
2 cups hot water

Pour baking soda down the sink drain. Mix vinegar and essential oils. Pour vinegar and essential oil mixture down the drain. Close the sink drain with a washcloth or the drain cover to seal the pipes and contain the reaction. Let this mixture foam and sit for about 15 minutes. Follow up by pouring 2 cups of hot water down the drain.

Many online recipes for natural drain fresher use lemon oil, so why don't I use it in this recipe?  I have plastic pipes and I find that lemon oil can "melt" plastics. I'm not 100% sure there would be a problem, I just decided not to take a chance.

Orange Creamsicle Homemade Air Freshener
This is my favorite room freshener, and I've shared it with you on this blog before. I love how the orange and other oils help to elevate my mood. The smell just makes me so happy. Somehow everything feels cleaner and brighter.  If you don't like citrus smells, once you make the basic spray mix, you can add whatever oils you want.

Basic spray mix:
1 oz. Witch Hazel
½ cups Distilled Water

Funnel (or measuring cup with a spout)
Small Aluminum Travel Spray Bottle

Oils for aromatherapy and air freshening:
2 drops of YL Orange Essential Oil
2 drops of YL Tangerine Essential Oil
2 drops of YL Lemon Essential Oil
2 drops of YL Grapefruit Essential Oil
2 drops of YL Spearmint Essential Oil
3 drops of YL Stress Away Essential Oil

In a bowl or measuring cup with a spout if you don't have a funnel, mix essential oils with the witch hazel.  Add the water and pour the mixture into an aluminum spray bottle.  Print or write a label so you remember what you made.

Here is the link to the bottles I bought on Amazon (http://a.co/3rgr7tL). After two years, the spray nozzle needs to be pulled up each time you spray. I am looking for replacements. Any ideas?

Carpet Freshener
Do you have a stinky wall-to-wall carpet that needs to be freshened up? Mix up this easy to make powder and let it freshen your carpets for you.

1 cup baking soda
5 drops YL Thieves Essential Oil blend (or - 1 drop YL cloves essential oil, 1 drop YL cinnamon essential oil, 1 drop YL rosemary essential oil, 1 drop YL lemon essential oil, and 1 drop YL eucalyptus oil)

Mix the baking soda and essential oil and allow it to dry overnight. Then it is ready to use. Sprinkle the mixture on your carpet, let it sit 15 minutes and when you vacuum it up you will be left with a fresher smelling carpet.

Hard Water Residue Remover Scrub
1 cup Epsom salts
½ cup baking soda
¼ cup Castile soap
2 drops YL essential oil (your choice, but don’t use citrus oils on plastic or granite surfaces)

Mix all the ingredients together in a small container or bowl right before you want to use it.  Put a small amount of the scrub mixture on a damp cloth and rub in a circular motion on shower doors, bathtubs, tiles, drains, and faucets. Let the mixture rest on surfaces for a few minutes then lightly rub again to remove hard water residue. Rinse with warm water and dry with a lint-free cloth. This scrub works best on dry surfaces.

Mold and Mildew “Killer” Spray
½ cup of water
½ cup of white vinegar
20 drops of tea tree oil

Mix all ingredients and put into a glass spray bottle. Spray over areas prone to mold or mildew (showers, under sinks).  This spray won’t remove pre-existing mold or mildew stains so treat stains with hydrogen peroxide to naturally bleach away the marks before spraying the space.

Honestly, What Do I Use Most Often When I Clean?
After sharing all these wonderful DIY cleaning ideas, I am almost ashamed to admit that what I use the most to clean my house, clothes, and dishes are Young Living's Thieves cleaning products. There are three reasons for this. First, Young Living's Thieves cleaners work amazingly well. Second, they are made with essential oils, so I know they are safe to use. Third, sometimes I just feel too lazy to make my own DIY cleaners.

If you want to learn more about Young Living and how to buy their products, contact me at caminoturtle2016@gmail.com

I love sharing what I know about essential oils and how I use them in my RV life.

Do you have a favorite DIY cleaning recipe?
Type your recipe, questions, or general comments in the chatbox below. Thanks. I love learning from all of you.

I really want this blog to be a place where we all share what we are learning about the journey to self-improvement and a better life. So, don't be shy. Add a comment to this post. Thanks.

PS: Just for a giggle
I thought I would show you how I wash my RV floors. I mix my Thieves cleaner (2 capfuls in a pail) and then put two of my Norwex car mitts on my feet. I put on some dance music and then dance to clean my floors. I just take off the mitts and rinse them out. No worries about my feet; I think they are actually cleaner, too. Because Thieves is all-natural, I'm not worried about any chemicals!

Repel Insects Naturally Using Essential Oils: DIY Bug Spray

Do you hate the idea of using a lot of toxic chemicals to keep bugs off of you? Well, so do I. After doing some research online, I discovered that I could use my essential oils. Hurrah!  So, read on, my friend, to see what I learned so you can deal with those pests without using toxic chemicals, too.

Let's talk about why you want to deter insects and what you might be using now. In the past, when I went camping, I used a lot of bug sprays to stop bugs from biting me. When I was at Disney World two years ago, they gave out insect repellent to deal with mosquitoes and to prevent the spread of disease. Yes, the primary reason most of us use bug sprays is that the bugs bite and they can spread diseases! However, most of the sprays and wipes that I used in the past had big warning labels. I won't name the brands but you likely know which ones I mean. Many of these products contained DEET. In the 1980s and 1990s, a lot of folks had concerns about the possibility of toxicity.  Well, I did some research into DEET using the Environmental Working Group's website and the CDC website. Both of these sites claim that there is no evidence of toxicity in DEET and that given its high level of efficacy, they both approve of the use of DEET to repel mosquitoes to avoid insect-borne diseases like malaria and the zika virus. Neither website had any studies on endocrine disruption, so until they do, I've decided to avoid using DEET.

So, what if you too don't want to use DEET and other store-bought insect repellents because of their long list of warnings and precautions? Well, then, it is time to make a DIY insect repellent using essential oils and a few other simple ingredients.  I found the recipe I am going to share with you on the Wellness Mama website.  I've made this recipe twice (both times adapted - see my notes) since July 2019.

I put Amazon links in the ingredients list so you can see what I bought.  If you don't shop online, you can find many of these ingredients in local stores as well. However, be sure that you are only using therapeutic, Grade A, pure essential oils. Many oils sold in stores are diluted and not safe. I know from my research that Young Living's oils are of the highest quality, so those are the ones I use. I put links in the ingredients list for the Young Living blog so you can read more about each of the oils listed in this DIY recipe.

DIY All-Natural Bug Spray

Ingredients
30 drops geranium essential oil
30 drops citronella essential oil
20 drops lemon eucalyptus essential oil
20 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops rosemary essential oil
1 Tablespoon rubbing alcohol or vodka
1/2 cup all-natural witch hazel
1/2 cup distilled water (or vinegar)
1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin (optional)

Directions
Place the essential oils in a glass spray bottle. Add alcohol and shake well to combine. Add the witch hazel and shake to combine. Add glycerin and shake. Add water and shake again. Makes a little more than 1 cup or about 300 ml. The bottle I used sprays a little strongly and I will likely find a replacement. I have some plastic bottles I like better, but I prefer glass for this essential oil mixture.

Usage
Shake the bottle each time before using to combine. Spray on hair, clothing, and gear. Repeat use every hour or so as needed. I keep a spray bottle on the ledge just inside my RV door and a smaller spray bottle in my backpack for hiking days. Since I live alone, this is not a problem. If you have pets or children with you, I wouldn't leave the bottles on the floor or on a table where they can get it, just in case they might drink it. If using this bug spray with children, Wellness Mama recommends that the spray only be used on clothing and other gear and not directly on their skin.  I found no guidelines for use on your pets, so I can't give you any advice on that.

My Notes
I made a few changes based on what oils I had in my RV at the time. First, I used Young Living's Eucalyptus Globulus Essential Oil instead of the Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil.  At the time of this post, Young Living is not yet selling Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil. Second, I ran out of Rosemary Essential Oil, so I substituted Young Living's Basil Essential Oil the first time and I used Young Living's Thyme Essential Oil the second time.  Both of these oils have been found to be effective insect repellents and seemed to work well. Third, the first time I made it, I didn't have the glycerin. While it isn't vital to the recipe, it does help to better emulsify the oils with the other ingredients, so I suggest that you do buy it.

Effectiveness
I first used this DIY Bug Spray in July 2019 while camping in the northwest New Jersey forests; I continued to use it in Maine in August, and in the eastern Canadian provinces when I was there in September.  The year 2019 had a wet summer so there were quite a few bugs late into fall. I found that bugs would not land on my skin when I sprayed this mixture on my clothing and skin. I did use it on my skin and found that I had no adverse effects. I love the smell - I am a big fan of Young Living's Geranium Essential Oil. None of the other campers ever complained about the smell and several actually liked it.

Packing Essential Oils for Airline Travel

I'm so excited to be getting ready for Young Living's Grand International Convention that will take place during the week of June 10, 2018. As I was preparing to travel, I thought you might be interested in seeing which essential oils I am packing in my carry-on bag to use before, during and after my flight. The photo here shows what I packed. Since I am not checking any luggage and will be traveling with a carry on suitcase and a tote bag, I will only bring the essential oils that fit in a ziplock snack bag. Then I can put this bag in the TSA allowed quart-size bag with my shampoo, conditioner, and other liquids. While I wish I could bring all my oils, I know that together these six essential oils will meet my needs for the week. So, how can you use each oil in this small set of Young Living essential oils to support wellness during travel:

Oregano (also available in Vitality line) - helps to boost the immune system. I put 4 drops in a nightly capsule with Thieves and Frankincense to help support the immune system, boost well-being, and general health.  Click this link to see how else I've used Oregano, Thieves, and Frankincense.

Peppermint Vitality - use topically to cool skin (I rub some on the back of my neck on hot days). Add a drop to a glass of water or tea for a great pick me up and to promote healthy intestinal function and support normal digestion. Diffuse (or smell) to lift your spirits and give you a boost of energy during physical activity like hiking or walking around a conference all day. Put a drop under your tongue as a quick breath fresher.

Thieves Vitality - a powerful essential oil that helps to support a healthy immune system (I add 10 drops to a nightly capsule with Oregano and Frankincense) In addition to the essential oil, I am packing my Thieves hand sanitizer.

Stress Away - a combination of lime and vanilla therapeutic grade essential oils, this blend has an amazingly comforting smell. (After all, travel days can be a little stressful, and this oil can help everyone relax)

Frankincense - diffuse (smell) to help with grounding during prayer and meditation. Add a drop to personal skincare products to promote a beautiful complexion. I add 2 drops to a nightly capsule with Oregano and Thieves to help support the immune system, well-being, and general health.

Lavender Vitality - diffuse (smell) to promote relaxation. Apply to skin to soothe skin. Rub on the bottom of the feet to help with a good night's sleep. Add to drinks like lemonade or tea to restore peace and balance.

Click the comment link below to share with us what you would pack if you could only bring six bottles with you on an airplane?

Be Humble, Not Humiliated

Don't you love it when God uses circumstances in your life to give you a message? Well for me that message is that He loves me and that there is no need for me to feel humiliated or embarrassed when I don't know how to do something or when I make mistakes. (Let's just say I've been making a lot of mistakes lately) Instead, I need to be humble and admit that I am a human being with limitations and weaknesses.

Chapter 2 in the Oola book I am reading is all about forgiving yourself for the mistakes of your past and learning from them. I love the analogy the authors use of the car's rearview mirror and windshield. The rearview mirror is small but sufficient for us to check on the places we've been in our past while the windshield is big and unobstructed so we can spend most of our time focusing on where we are going. One of the authors shared "I am not the person I want to be, but thank God I'm not the person I was". I share his sentiment and thank God for all He is doing to help me to grow and become a better person.

So, remember it's okay to glance back at your past on occasion so you can learn from the mistakes you made but don't beat yourself up about it. Together we are going to focus on our futures as we work to gain balance in our lives and grow. Our past is a teacher so we can do better in the future!

Using Essential Oils To Feel Better When You Have a Cold

As I mentioned in my last post, I was pretty miserable while camping near Savannah. Sinus drainage and terrible coughing were making it hard for me to visit or explore. I must confess that at first, I did buy a cold remedy product from the local store. It is famous for relieving your stuffy nose so you can sleep. But I hated the way it made me feel when I woke up. I was disoriented and confused. Something that was supposed to make me feel better was making me feel worse. So, I did some research online and read my essential oils reference book to see which oils have components that could help my body naturally support my respiratory system. Young Living's Thieves, oregano and frankincense were my top three favorites.

I put these three essential oils in a vegetable capsule to boost my immune system. But, I felt like I still needed something more to make me feel better. In the past, I would rub a store-bought product on my chest and neck to help me to breathe more freely. Since I wanted a natural alternative, I made my own DIY chest rub with almond oil mixed with Young Living's eucalyptus, peppermint, and wintergreen essential oils. I loved knowing that I wasn't putting a petroleum-based product on my skin. (It smelled great and helped me to breathe better, too)

During the day, I diffused Young Living's "Peace and Calming" essential oil blend to help me to take a few much-needed naps. I also made a linen spray with Young Living's grade A lavender essential oil in it. At night before I went to bed, I sprayed this on my pillow and sheets. Not only did it help to create a relaxed feeling, but it also helped to freshen things.

I got the "recipe" for the spray and a nice pre-made label for my small metal spray bottle from a Pinterest post I found online.  If you want to learn more about this spray recipe or anything else about Young Living, you can contact me using  holyrollingoilers at my gmail.com account.

Toxic-Free RV Cleaning Using Essential Oils

It's Saturday, so you know what that means? Housekeeping chores. As a newly retired, full-time RV owner, I plan to spend Saturdays cleaning and maintaining the RV. (Since Saturdays are the busiest day for tourist locations, I can work on Saturdays and play when things are less crowded.) Living in a small RV I don't want toxic residue on everything. So I use a cleaner made by Young Living called Thieves which is infused with essential oils. At first, I was skeptical that Thieves would clean as well as my old store-bought products. So this past month I did a test. I cleaned one square of the floor in my RV with Thieves. Can you guess which square I cleaned in the photo shown here? Yup, I was amazed! So I washed the rest of the floor with the Thieves cleaner and the only thing I smelled when I was finished was cloves and other essential oils. I didn't need to vent the RV or worry about chemical smells.

Do you know what toxins are in these cleaners?
I am also making my own DIY cleaning products to replace the terrible toxic cleaners and beauty products I used to have under my kitchen sink and in my bathroom. For example, I used to love scented candles and air fresheners, but I recently discovered that many of these store-bought products have phthalates in them. To learn more about the risks of using scented candles and store-bought air sprays and scented plugs-ins read this Woman's Day Magazine article. You can also see what's in the products you use with an iPhone app called Healthy Living by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Natural, plant-based ingredients for DIY cleaners
In addition to cleaning with Thieves, I started making my own air fresheners and beauty products. My favorite new air freshener is one called Creamsicle. To make it, start with a base of 1/3 cup distilled water and 1 Tbsp witch hazel or vodka. Add 4 drops Young Living Tangerine Oil, 3 drops Young Living Orange Oil, 3 drops Young Living Stress Away Oil. I love YL's tangerine oil. Tangerine oils add an extra sweet aroma to the spray but if you don't have it, you can use 7 drops of orange oil instead.

Grapefruit Essential Oil Crisis

Yes, folks, there was a grapefruit crisis in my RV today. I completely ran out of my Young Living (YL) grapefruit essential oil! It's okay, I know that you don't really understand why this is such a big deal. Just know that when the last drop of oil fell out of my YL grapefruit vitality bottle into my glass, I filled the bottle with water and swished it around so I could get every last drop. So, why do I love grapefruit oil and especially YL's grapefruit essential oil?

Well, first it's the taste. I have a hard time drinking enough water because I find plain water boring. When I put 2 drops of YL grapefruit vitality oil in my water, I enjoy its taste and I drink more. I know it's safe to put grapefruit oil in my water because YL's oil is produced by cold pressing the peel of organic fruit and the oils are therapeutic grade.

Then there is how much I love how the smell of grapefruit oil makes me feel. Grapefruit oil has such a bright and citrusy smell. I'm not sure exactly how it works but when I diffuse YL's grapefruit oil, I feel my mood lift. I feel more playful and joy-filled.

I love YL's grapefruit oil because of the benefits of limonene, a component in grapefruit oil. (If you search the internet you can find more details about how the limonene in grapefruit oil supports weight management). I love the essential oil as much as I love eating grapefruits!

Grapefruit oil gives my skin a smooth-looking glow. I just add a drop to my usual morning moisturizer and mix it up before putting it on my face, neck, and hands. (Don't use citrus oils on your skin when you will be in the sun.)

So now, do you understand why I said it was a grapefruit crisis? Don't worry, I will survive until next month. My sister Susie said she will lend me a bottle of grapefruit oil from her supply because I will absolutely be adding a bottle or two of grapefruit oil to my next monthly Essential Rewards (ER) order.

What's ER? If you want to learn more about Young Living and their ER program click this link to go to Young Living's Essential Rewards website. It took me a while to see the benefits of the Essential Rewards program but having used it for the past three months, I am beginning to get it.

If you can't wait to go to their site, here are some of the reasons I order my oils using the Essential Rewards program.

First, Young Living discounts the shipping costs if you are an ER member.

Second, you get a percentage of your purchase back in points that you can use to order more oils or oil-infused cleaning products or supplements.

Third, based on the amount you spend, you can get free bonus oils. (This month since I ordered 100PV I got a free 5 ml. oregano oil)

And, when you order consistently every month, Young Living rewards you with another free oil. (Since this was my third month ordering 50PV or more I earned a free 5 ml. bottle of peppermint, another favorite oil).

It's amazing to me that by just ordering the things I want anyway (Thieves dish soap, Thieves cleaner, grapefruit oil, peppermint oil and my chocolate protein powder) I get discounts and bonuses. And, because I am a Young Living Essential Oil distributor, I get paid for doing what I love. Amazing!

I still have much to learn, but if you would like to know more, please contact me at my new work email address holyrollingoilers@gmail.com

DIY Air Fresheners Using Essential Oils

Recently I researched ways to create non-toxic air fresheners after I learned more about the toxins that are actually in the ones you buy at the store. If you want to read more about the bad side effects from the phthalate found in many store-bought air fresheners and scented candles, go to my Holy Rolling Oilers website.

Now for the happy part of this post.  I found a way to make my own air fresheners using therapeutic quality essential oils that smell great, remove bad odors from the air and are healthy for me at the same time. These DIY air freshener recipes were created by me using Pinterest for inspiration. The base mixture for all of these DIY room sprays is the same. My measurements were for my small travel-sized aluminum spray bottles. If you use larger bottles, adjust the amounts accordingly.

DIY Room Sprays Base Recipe
1/3 cup distilled water
1 Tablespoon Witch Hazel
9-12 drops essential oils of choice (adjust to your preferred aroma)

Orange Creamsicle Room Spray
Add the following oils to the base recipe:
4 drops Young Living Tangerine Oil
3 drops Young Living Orange Oil
3 drops Young Living Stress Away Oil
I love YL's tangerine oil. Tangerine oils adds an extra sweet aroma to the spray but if you don't have it, you can use 7 drops of orange oil instead.

Mojito Room Spray
Add the following oils to the base recipe:
4 drops Young Living Peppermint Oil
3 drops Young Living Spearmint Oil
3 drops Young Living Lime Oil
I love the minty freshness of this mixture. The different mint oils are amazing.

Lemonade Room Spray
Add the following oils to the base recipe:
6 drops Young Living Lemon Oil
3 drops Young Living Grapefruit Oil
3 drops Young Living Stress Away Oil
This room spray just makes me smile with its fresh, clean smell.

Do you make your own room sprays with essential oils?  If yes, please share with all of us in the comments section of this post.
